Sport Taekwondo - Sport Poomsae
Poomsae - A Fundamental of Tae Kwon
Taekwondo has a long history as a martial art and is still practiced as a traditional martial art today. Taekwondo is also a competition sport.
Thanks to the amazing athletes and the excellent organizations and people involved, Taekwondo is now an Olympic Sport with over 200 countries participating in Taekwondo events around the world.
There are two official WTF Taekwondo sports: Olympic Style Sparring and Sport Poomsae
Taekwondo Olympic Style Sparring made its debut as a demonstration sport at the Seoul 1988 Games.
It was officially added as an Olympic Sport in the Sydney 2000 Games.
Taekwondo Sport Poomsae is not an Olympic sport at this time, but it is an international sport. The World Taekwondo Federation adopted Authorized Poomsae as an official sport, with the 1st WTF Poomsae Competition held in Seoul, Korea in 2006. Since then, WTF Poomsae World Championship Competitions have been held in countries around the world. Sport Poomsae competitors now have the opportunity to compete at Local, State, National, and World events.
Texas White Tiger Tae Kwon Do athletes have the opportunity to compete in Sport Poomsae at Local, State, National, and International events.

What is Poomsae?
Poomsae is a fundamental training method of Taekwondo. Poomsae provides a method of solo practice to train blocks, attacks, and counter attacks against imaginary opponent/s (of equal size and height). Poomsae was designed for both offensive and defensive training. In practice, the martial artist can step, change direction, change stance, shift their weight, and block and attack in logical patterns for combat and defense.
In the distant past, poomsae was primarily used for training combat skills, as it provided a safe and effective rehersal of taekwondo skills needed in battle, along with necessary mental and physical training. In later years poomsae became important for maintaining health and mental and physical fitness. Poomsae can be practiced throughout one's entire lifetime, and the art of poomsae has long been valued along with the training it provides in technique and skill.
Today poomsae is all of those things, as well as a sport. Sport Poomsae places emphasis on athleticism, skill, and presentation (In a sense, the very things that made the skills effective in the ancient past. though the focus of "presentation" was battle-readiness then instead of the precision and art it is today). In Sport Poomsae today, skills and techniques are scored based on accuracy, overall presentation, athleticism, art, and martial spirit. Modern training methods allow for more flexibility than our ancestors may have exhibited in a fight, but today's athletes work to improve their flexibility and perform high kicks to demonstrate their athleticism and martial spirit. Sport Poomsae can be enjoyed by all ages, and competitors at events can be seen from age 6 to 65+. It's a sport that is growing in popularity. Competiton uses WTF Authorized Poomsae (Taeguek and Black Belt poomsae) for regular competition, with opportunites for males and females to compete as individual competitors, in pairs, or teams. Creative Poomsae events are available for those who wish to create their own Poomsae, and provide opportunities to add gymnastic, acrobatic, dance, or different (from Authorized Poomsae) Taekwondo skills as part of their Poomsae routine.
In today's Taekwondo training, Poomsae provides the same benefits it has since the beginning of Taekwondo. Poomsae provides excellent training of skills, techniques, balance, stepping, changing direction, changing stance, shifting weight, while blocking or attacking. Poomsae provides mental and physical training as one memorizes the patterns, and then performs them with accuracy, skill, and intent. Poomsae can be practiced by all ages, from young to old, and provides an excellent way to safely practice self-defense skills, and maintain good health throughout one's entire lifetime.
Martial Artists who have trained in Poomsae for any length of time can also tell you that Poomsae practice makes Tae Kwon Do come alive. Over time, the details start to make sense, and the martial artist begins to realize that Poomsae contains a lifetime of information to discover and learn. The attacks, counterattacks, blocks, strikes, targeting, control of power, timing, breathing, shift in body weight, change in direction and stance, are all designed to be practiced with an imaginary opponent, along the Poomsae lines. With practice the understanding of when and how to use the techniques becomes more clear. Practice leads to a deeper understanding of the art of Tae Kwon Do and about oneself.
Sport Poomsae is a wonderful sport that can be practiced as a team and/or individual sport. It's one of the safest sports available, helps maintain mental and physical fitness, and is great for all ages. Opportunities for winning Gold are real with proper training and hard work, but the benefits practice brings is perhaps the greatest reward. Some people use Sports Poomsae competition as motivators to practice. Others have dreams of winning Gold at the World Championship Competitions. People enter into Sport Poomsae from all walks of life, at all ages, for a variety of reasons with one thing in commom - a love and passion for Taekwondo.
